Le Bestiaire was Poulenc’s first collection of mélodies. Poulenc and Durey were colleagues—both were members of the avant-garde group of composers, “Les Six.” Durey, Poulenc, and Apollinaire all fought on France’s behalf during World War I. And Poulenc’s piece had a refreshingly delightful newness about it. It demonstrated “frenchness” through simple melodies, fragments, and significance below the simplicity. Le Bestiaire set six of Guillaume Apollinaire’s poems for soprano, string quartet, flute, clarinet, and bassoon. Though Poulenc had read Apollinaire before, it was a live recitation by the poet in 1919 that inspired the composer to set his texts to music; the resulting song cycle, Le Bestiaire, stands as the first of several convergences between Apollinaire 's poetry and Poulenc 's music.
