Poulenc and Durey were colleagues—both were members of the avant-garde group of composers, “Les Six.” Durey, Poulenc, and Apollinaire all fought on France’s behalf during World War I. And Poulenc’s piece had a refreshingly delightful newness about it. It demonstrated “frenchness” through simple melodies, fragments, and significance below the simplicity.
